Press Notice – Area Inspection Programme Phase 3 – CPS Yorkshire and Humberside

Published:

CPS Yorkshire and Humberside highlights best practice across England and Wales, says HMCPSI

CPS Yorkshire and Humberside is delivering a great prosecution service that strengthens the criminal justice system, increases public trust among residents and highlights what works well for all other CPS Areas to follow, says the CPS Inspectorate.

His Majesty’s Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate (HMCPSI) has today (Tuesday 30 September) published its inspection report for CPS Yorkshire and Humberside Area, revealing substantial improvements in casework quality and case management across the region.

The inspection, conducted as part of the third phase of HMCPSI’s Area Inspection Programme, found that Yorkshire and Humberside Area has made impressive progress since HMCPSI inspected all CPS Areas in 2022.

Inspectors found that Yorkshire and Humberside Area excelled in several areas. The Area delivered an excellent service for the local community with improvements in their how they communicate with victims.

CPS staff work effectively with partners across the criminal justice system, including police and the courts. For example, CPS has delivered joint training and learning with local police forces, which strengthens mutual trust and builds shared expertise.

Internally, all teams work successfully together, management processes are robust, senior management have been receptive to making improvements and the Area effectively manages resources.

Performance management has significantly improved after the Area made use of real-time data through a bespoke performance tool, which is unique to CPS Yorkshire and Humberside. This allows staff to identify trends and take action without waiting for quarterly data.

HMCPSI Chief Inspector, Anthony Rogers, said:

“The criminal justice system is in a perilous position, and this has a direct impact on CPS. Case numbers have increased, the court backlog continues to grow and there needs to be radical improvements made.

“Despite this difficult environment, what we have seen in CPS Yorkshire and Humberside is best practice and a standard that the other thirteen CPS Areas can learn from. CPS Yorkshire and Humberside deliver an outstanding service and this benefits victims, strengthens the local justice system and communities can trust that their needs will be met if they are a victim of crime.

“I urge the Director of Public Prosecutions and other CPS Areas to closely consider the findings of this report and help drive performance across England and Wales.”
