Custody Time Limits

Published:

Today HMCPSI has published a report on how the CPS manages and assures cases where defendants are in custody. We found committed staff and some evidence of effective practice but identified that the current approach is no longer fit for purpose given the rising court backlogs and increases in custody casework. We make three recommendations to address issues in the short term and a fourth, longer-term recommendation, to develop a new approach to how CPS assesses and manages custody time limit assurance in a more focussed way.
