CPS Inspectorate extends Calocane inspection

Published:

The inspection into CPS’s actions in the Valdo Calocane case has been widened to include actions taken by CPS in all matters relating to Calocane, HMCPSI has confirmed.

His Majesty’s Crown Prosecution Inspectorate (HMCPSI) was asked by the Attorney General to carry out an independent investigation of the actions of the CPS in the Valdo Calocane case following concerns raised by the family.

After meeting the families on 9 February, Deputy Chief Inspector Anthony Rogers accepted their request to widen the scope of the inspection to look at any interaction Calocane had with the CPS and not just matters related to events on 13 June 2023.

The other areas of HMCPSI’s inspection will look at all aspects that determined the CPS’s decision to accept Valdo Calocane’s guilty pleas to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility, and whether the CPS met its duties to consult with families ahead of accepting pleas.
