Mental Health Awareness Week

Published:

During this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, we are reflecting on a joint thematic inspection we conducted with the other criminal justice inspectorates in 2021 on how people with mental health needs interact with the criminal justice system. The report found that mental ill-health poses significant challenges for criminal justice agencies and while there had been some improvements since Lord Bradley’s 2009 review, people with mental health needs were being failed.

In the four years since this report was published, mental health in the criminal justice system remains an issue – one that requires a holistic response to ensure that offenders are not missed, the courts and other services are supported, and the public’s trust is restored.
